Lighting References for the Performance Section of Our Video

I looked at various different music videos of similar genres to ours and picked out parts of the music video which serve as a good visual reference for different aspects of the performance element of our music video.

There For Tomorrow - Deathbed

Demi Lovato - Heart Attack

Fashion Test 1

We wanted to test out different types of clothes and see what works best. The only primary factor was for the clothes to incorporate purple and black.

These clothes work well, although the top on the lead singer is too loose, considering there will be a lot of jumping and moving around in the performance scene. The addition of a belt could easily resolve this problem.

Profile for Alec

In order to bring our band to life we've decided to give each band member a specific style, look and personality. While following some synergistic qualities (such as the purple colour scheme), we want each band member to stand out. Here is the profile for the band member Alex is playing as, Alec:

Name - Alec

Age - 19

Band Role: Keyboard Player/DJ

What I stand for -  Promoting artistic expression.

Personality traits - Casual/laid back, trendy, witty, good at selfies and avid user of twitter.

Presentation Feedback

  • Our band need to fit in with audience more. Through personal/political views.
  • Have signifiers for the electro genre and rock genre.
  • Exploit the fact that we are a evenly mix-gendered group. This can be done through publicity shots.
  • It should be the breakdown of a pop star rather than actress (this connotes the change from a pop star to a rock star and it makes more sense as we are having the celebrity become the lead singer of the rock band at the end of the video.
  • Modify scenes we already have to fit the pop star persona. (shooting a music video, Album signing, social networks)
  • We can portray ourselves as hard-core and gritty but accessible.
  • Make sure we create a obvious difference between pop star and rock star even though they are played by the same person.
  • We could have a Simon Cowell-like figure in the background.
  • We could use photos to condense narrative if we need to.
  • We could use newspaper headlines to condense narrative too.
  • Our lead singer could have tattoos, which she has to cover up when she is a pop star (this would be shown in the music video).
  • We need to have 5 signifiers for each character.
  • Have common signifiers between band members for realism and synergy, but have distinct personalities for each one.
  • Strong personalities from non-singing band members to balance with the singer.
  • We should look at how band members move with their instruments and how we want to move in our music video.
  • We should book a screen test.

Our Record Label

From our research into record labels that can be seen here, we've decided on a few important factors that summarizes the record label:

  • Label name: Silence Is Enemy
  • Formed in 1998
  • Division of Universal Music Group
  • Signs Alternative/ Indie Rock Bands

  • Record Label Research

     Fueled by Ramen

Thinking about what we want our own record label to be like, specifically what types of bands are signed, the logo characteristics, and other factors, we looked at current record labels that have signed bands similar to ours in terms of style and genre.

    Fueled by Ramen

    • Formed 1996
    • Active Artists include: Cobra Starship, Fun., Ghost Town, Gym Class Heroes, Panic! at the Disco, Paramore, Rome, Travie McCoy, Twenty One Pilots.
    • Subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

    Wind-up Records

    • Formed 1997
    • Active Artists include: Evanescence, The Darkness, Civil Twilight, Young Guns and Seether.
    • Wind-up is currently the largest independently-owned record label in the world.

    Similarities:

    • Mainly bands signed
    • Formed at a similar period
    • Genre of music similar
    • Bands and artist have a particular style (modern rock)
    • Shape of logo
    Differences:
    • Colour of logo
    • Fueled By Ramen is a subsidiary, whereas Wind-up Records is independent
